Preschoolers in Ruth Burnett’s PA Pre-K Counts classroom at Tiny Tot Child Development Center, Beaver County, experienced cooking from scratch first hand as part of their Thanksgiving theme.
Several months before November, children planted corn in the garden at the center and were able to watch it transform from a seed to a corn stalk producing ears of corn.
Moving forward to November, the children learned about Native Americans and compared how they lived in the past and present. The children were exposed to many of the different aspects of their life.
One of the activities the children participated in was grinding corn on a metate to make corn flour. The children were able to grind enough corn to fill a measuring cup a quarter full.
The next day the children used the corn flour to make corn muffins.
