The Greater Nanticoke Area Family Center/Pre-K Counts Director shares how the staff and families in her programs benefit from the PA Early Learning Standards.

Our Greater Nanticoke Area Family Center staff and families have clearly benefited from our using the PA Early Learning Standards (ELS) resources in connection with our PAT (Parents as Teachers) program.  In addition to our PAT home visiting curricula being aligned with the Early Learning Standards (ages prenatal through kindergarten), we have used the ELS to guide us in preparing parent workshops, parent-child newsletters, and group activities for children at our center.

The ELS posters have been a great tool for helping me organize discussion workshops with parents.  In small groups at tables, parents  brainstorm different key learning areas, using their table’s poster as a guide to come up with ideas for tying in that learning area in everyday life at home or on an outing with their child.  Some of their ideas have been incorporated in our seasonal parent-child newsletter brochures, which we distribute in our school district and in the community to ages birth through grade three.  We do some of the newsletter activity suggestions with groups of children at our center, who in turn take the newsletter home to share with their parents.

The Continuum guide is my go-to resource for planning the newsletters, discussion groups, and group activities; plus, during PAT home visits the Continuum helps guide the conversation I have with parents about how what we are doing with their very young child will develop into a higher level skill or capability with their child during his or her school years.
