Raising Readers in Fayette County

Parents of the Wharton PA Pre-K Counts and Kindergarten students at Marclay and Wharton Elementary Schools participated in a Raising Readers Parent Club facilitated by the District literacy coaches, Mrs. Bonnie Nesser and Mrs. Linda Ruda and school principal, Ms. Rebecca Maddas.

Is your child at least 3 years old, but younger than the entry age for kindergarten? Would you like for your child to get a strong start in school and life? PA Pre-K Counts may be just right for your child!

PA Pre-K Counts is accepting applications for the free, high-quality pre-K program for families that qualify (to be eligible, a family of four can make up to $70,650 annually).

National Endowment for the Arts Grant support local literacy initiative

Students who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma than proficient readers, a recent national study shows. In order to help connect children with meaningful literacy experiences and boost their interest in reading, The Learning Lamp will host the sixth annual Children’s Book Festival of Johnstown.

A $10,000 Challenge America Fast-Track grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will help fund the free, family-friendly event, (more…)
